The approach to asthma has changed with the recognition that it is not one single disease and there are many phenotypic expressions of the disease. Targeted treatment for distinct phenotypes of asthma has begun. Can this approach be used for COPD? Are there specific treatable traits in certain COPD patients that call for a different therapeutic approach? This session will explore 5 different phenotypes of COPD: the alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency patient; the chronic bronchitic; the frequent exacerbator; the ACOS patient; and the "rapid decliner." These examples will provide evidence that we are entering a phase of precision medicine for COPD.
