Long-term oxygen therapy is one of the most common therapies that COPD patients receive. There have been no studies of significance being conducted in the last 30 years examining use of supplemental oxygen in COPD patients. The National Heart Lung Blood Institute long-term oxygen treatment trial is the largest
and longest trial ever conducted examining the feasibility and effectiveness of oxygen supplementation in patients with COPD. Specifically if provides little information regarding the use of supplemental oxygen in patients with mild to moderate hypoxia at rest or with normoxia and desaturation only with exercise.
