Description

Hyperinflation is a major complication of COPD especially for patients who have predominantly emphysema as a structural cause of their disease. It affects patient's exercise performance, quality of life, and contributes to increase mortality. Lung volume reduction surgery has been shown to be effective treatment in selected patients in improving lung function, quality of life and in a select subgroup–survival. Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction which includes a variety of techniques plus other endoscopic treatments that can produce lung denervation have been recently demonstrated to have clinical benefit in some clinical trials that are focused on small numbers of patients followed for short periods of time. Recently, large randomized prospective randomized controlled trials have been conducted with a variety of bronchoscopic treatments that show promise to treat hyperinflation and improve patient outcome. In this session, leading international experts will discuss a variety of bronchoscopic lung reduction techniques and provide an up-to-date summary of new findings and new directions in the exploration of these therapies to treat the hyperinflated COPD patient.
