While the WHO pulmonary hypertension (PH) classification scheme neatly distinguishes between various forms of PH, often there are overlapping features resulting in complex phenotypes of disease. Uncovering the underlying hemodynamic milieu of individual patients can often allow for appropriate classification, resulting in appropriate and effective treatment and referral for specialty care. This session will review basic approaches in phenotyping PH subtypes (focusing on differentiating and recognizing overlaps of WHO groups I through III) and will introduce emerging concepts in the prognostication and treatment of these patients based on classification.
